Gail Whiteman joined the Harrison & Harrison family in December 2007; she came to the firm from Digicel where she was in charge of intellectual property matters for the Digicel Group (which includes Jamaica and 23 other territories). She also provided advice across the Digicel Group on general commercial law matters as well as performing company secretarial services. Gail comes from a long line of civil servants so it was no surprise that she started her law career in 2000 at the Attorney General’s Chambers. She first worked in the Commercial Department where she gained invaluable experience in that area of law. In 2004 she transferred to the Constitutional Law and Legislative Drafting division of the Attorney General’s Chambers, where she worked on drafting and amending various pieces of legislation and attended committees of Cabinet and Parliament in relation to Cabinet submissions and bills. She also advised the litigation division particularly on matters of constitutional law. Gail now heads up the Intellectual Property Law division of Harrison & Harrison assisting clients with copyrighting, trademarking and patenting their works. She has worked with several of her clients in negotiating recording contracts and publishing deals as well as registering their works overseas. Gail has a deep appreciation for the arts and in particular loves live music. She has found a way to combine her passion for this area with the practice of law and specializes in intellectual property. Her goal is to increase her clients’ awareness of their intellectual property rights and she works to assist them in protecting these rights as well as entering into suitable contractual relationships which adequately honour and protect their artistic achievements! Gail is a British Chevening Scholar and obtained a masters degree in Intellectual Property and Entertainment Law from King’s College London in 2006. She is a certified mediator and spinning instructor and enjoys the practice of yoga.
